Newborn Hearing Program
The Newborn Hearing Program contract is between the Center on Deafness and the State of Tennessee, Department of Health.
The main goals of this program are to:
- Collaborate with the Department of Health Maternal and Child Health programs, including, but not limited to, Newborn Hearing Screening (NHS), Newborn Hearing Screening Task Force, Children's Special Services (CSS) and Genetics Program staff to assist with the program development and capacity building for newborn hearing screening, assessment, and intervention systems in East, Middle, and West Tennessee.
- Collaborate with the Department of Health and the Department of Education, Special Education, Tennessee Early Intervention System (TEIS) (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Part C program) and the Tennessee Infant Parent Services (TIPS) in consulting with Local Education Agencies (LEAs) and other agencies regarding the transition of children with disabilities in order to seamlessly merge children with their school peers.
- Coordinate and collaborate with the TEIS and TIPS programs on tracking and follow-up of newborn hearing referrals from the Department of Health Hearing Screening program.
- Collaborate with other agencies associated with early intervention services to assist in the development of standards and protocols for early intervention services for infants and toddlers.
